Mervyn was outside the theatre which is presumably a fairly lucrative place to be when you need money and are homeless. He told me his friends call him ‘Smurf’. We had quite a chat, much of which was personal to him. I wish I had a magic wand.
It is indeed and perhaps I should have left it at that. He has had a tough time and was so genuine and honest about his ‘problems’. I chatted to him for a while – I know you would like him.
This portrait is extraordinary in so many ways Chris. The composition lends integrity … but what is so capturing is his gaze. The two sides of his face so different. Who’s to judge or compare really? You show this so well….
I hope so, although it was so little, Pam. I did give him some money for a meal and a couple of beers or perhaps just beers but not enough to make a real difference.
Such eyes. You’ve captured more than just the physical with this shot, Chris! A ‘great’ image.
I hope my photographs do show my respect for Mervyn and his fellow sufferers. Thank you so much.
There but for the grace go I..
wonderful photo!
And I too.
And thank you.
Smurf is a great name too. I’d like to meet him.

Mervyn was so relaxed he made it easy for me. Very open and gentle. I hope I captured his dignity more than anything else. Thank you Jana, so much.
Oh you have Chris…beautifully. This picture is memorable in so many ways. A series perhaps?
If people are happy for me to record them and their situations I would be proud to do so. Thanks Jana.
Your photos are always amazing!
Well it is the subjects themselves which really make the photograph – I am their recorder I think but many thanks Lance for this lovely comment 🙂
Giving him your time, I’m positive, was a gift.

It’s so hard to experience. Wanting to help someone who is just beyond your ability to do so.
Your time helped. I know it.
🙂
