I just love this young woman’s hair with the flower in it. What joy!

I took this photo on arriving at Southend and on our return to the car this young man was still in the same place. It was New Year’s Eve and absolutely freezing. I had a chat with him – he told me that he had been homeless for some time following falling into arrears with his rent. He admitted that he had not been as responsible as he should have been. However, I have been irresponsible many times but am fortunate enough to have had a strong safety net around me. Clearly he has not.
I have decided to repost this image in support of Saudi Arabian blogger Raif Badawi whose calls for freedom of thought and speech have resulted in his being imprisoned for ten years, fined, and also sentenced to 1000 lashes – 50 a week for a total of 20 weeks. As bloggers ourselves and with the freedom to record and share our thoughts and words, images and creations, I ask you to think of Raif and what his terrible punishment means, both to him and his family but also to our world at large. Thank you.
Dear WordPressers
Raif Badawi, of Saudi Arabia, was today given the first 50 lashes of 1000. This barbarity is to continue for another 19 weeks. He has also been sentenced to ten years imprisonment as well as being fined for his crime.
What did he do? He wrote on his blog of the importance of freedom of thought and expression. He did not steal, maim, rape or kill anyone. His government fear his words so much they have chosen to punish him as an example in order to quieten others in that country.
Please consider supporting Raif and let him know his name and courage shine out to us all.
Thank you.
